Science and Theology: Is There New Ground To Be Plowed?

Anna Case-Winters, Ph.D. (McCormick Theological Seminary), Thomas L. Gilbert, Ph.D. (LSTC and formerly of Argonne National Laboratory), Zachary Hayes, Ph.D. (Catholic Theological Union), and Jerome A. Stone, Ph.D. (William Rainey Harper College) will form a panel that will start the Society’s meeting with an open, critical, and forward thinking discussion on science and theology.

Theological Table Talk: Once again the Society will begin its semi-annual meeting with a critical, informal, and early afternoon discussion on one of the most important cultural and theological issues of the day–the relationship of science and theology. If there is nothing in the world that cannot be approached scientifically, and if nothing falls outside the concerns of theology, how can representatives of the two camps afford to continue to communicate with each other so badly? How can there continue to be such open hostility, claims to dominance (and even exclusivity) from both sides of the discussion? How shall scientists and theologians proceed? Are there any common terms, and who sets them? Can anything good come of a dialogue between theologians and scientists–or just rancor, on the one hand, or capitulation, on the other? We are grateful for our colleagues who will open this crucial colloquy.

Registration and Dinner Reservations: Every fall and spring meeting our colleagues of the host institutions will find their workload greatly eased if we register for the meeting and make reservations for the dinner. Registration and reservations could not be simpler. Dinner is $10.00. Because ATS meetings are supported by the host institution, registration is without charge for which we are deeply appreciative.
 
 
Dues: Annual membership dues (to cover the costs of printing, mail, and other incidentals) are $15 for members and $10 for associate members to be remitted to the Treasurer, Don Alexander, each year at the fall meeting. Attention to this is appreciated. Also, the Society’s membership role remains strong only as we invite our eligible colleagues to join us and sponsor them for membership. Advocacy for the Society is important.
 
 
Directions and Parking: The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago is found conveniently at the corner of 55th Street and University Avenue in Hyde Park. Parking is available on the street or in the parking lot at the north end of the seminary.
